My musical journey is very simple and unfortunately not that interesting. Since I was a little boy living in Cuba, I was always fascinated by foreign music. I remember sitting down with my mother every Friday to watch Colorama. Colorama was a Cuban television show where they would play music from artists from all over the world, mostly Americans. That's how it all started for me.
Later in live I actually wanted to take guitar lessons. But, I was not allowed in art schools, because I was a Jehovah's witness. Only communists were allowed. But, I never gave up. Thank god that a few years later, the American embassy gave us the go ahead to move the United States of America.
Here, I was introduced to the band Overkill. I remember I was sitting at a biology class when my friend handed over his ear pot. He was playing the years of decay. I was blown away by Gustafson's guitar mastery. In that moment I realized I wanted to be a metal guitarist. I signed up for classical guitar lessons with Dr. Albert Kunze and started my journey as a musician.
By the time I went to college I already had a lot of ideas and compositions, but no way to record them. So, I focused on perfecting my technique with Jose Adam and I also started taking sound recording as a minor. Not to mention music theory, choir and all the other music classes that were mandatory by my major. Later, I got a job in an art gallery to start start buying my equipment's and the ball started rolling.
I tell ya, I tried finding musicians all over. But there was no internet back then, and the people around my area were not even close to the level they needed to be in order to play my music. Long story short, I gave up on trying to get the band together and started making my music alone. I didn't want to waste time jumping from band to band, playing shows after shows for nothing.
Well, to this day I am still making music and I believe I will never stop. It is my passion. But, It is unfortunate that metal is not what it used to be. I personally blame MTV and radio stations who neglected to play metal due to the pushback from Christian fanatics during that time. But, I never let go, and here I am as raw, and as honest, as I've always been.
